Samsung Unveils Two Windows Phone 8 Devices, “Odyssey” and “Marco”

South Korean mobile phone maker Samsung is one of the handset vendors set to launch Windows Phone 8 devices when the new platform becomes available, and it seems that the company has at least two such smartphones ready. As part of an ongoing lawsuit with Apple, Samsung brought as evidence said two Windows Phone 8 smartphones, codenamed "Odyssey" and "Marco."According to the company, both these smartphones will come to the market with dual-core application processors inside. To be more precise, the documents that Samsung showed to the court unveiled that these handsets are powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon MSM8960 dual-core 1.5GHz chip, The Verge reports. This is the same SoC that Microsoft has been previously said to have been using for testing the upcoming platform release, meaning that Samsung’s devices will be fully optimized for Windows Phone 8.

Additionally, the aforementioned documents unveiled that both phones will pack support for LTE and HSPA+ 21Mbps connectivity. Samsung Odyssey will sport a 4.65-inch HD sAMOLED touchscreen display, while featuring an 8-megapixel photo snapper on the back, and a 2MP camera on the front.
The handset will also become available with NFC (Near Field Communication) capabilities, which means that it will provide users with support for Wallet Hub and Tap + Send features.
Codenamed Marco, the second Samsung Windows Phone 8 handset will pack a 4-inch WVGA sAMOLED display, along with a 5-megapixel camera on the back, and a 2MP camera on the front.
Said documents also show that Samsung was planning to make these two available for purchase sometime in the fourth quarter of the year, in line with previous rumors on Windows Phone 8’s launch.

When released, Windows Phone 8 will be loaded on devices coming from other handset vendors as well, including Nokia, which is considered to be Microsoft’s primary partner on this.

The first Windows Phone 8 smartphones might become official in September, yet market availability is expected to occur only in October or November.

SONY Xperia Tablet Unveiled

Electronics giant, Japanese company Sony has eventually decided not to miss on the huge opportunity that the tablet market offers. As the initial Tablet S became obsolete and did not achieve great sales, the company is now preparing for Tablet S’ successor. The new Android-based tablet from Sony will be called Xperia and will feature the same 9.4” screen with a 1280 by 800 pixel resolution.Despite the fact that the new model keeps the same folded-paper profile that Tablet S did, Sony claims that Xperia is 42% thinner.
The complete name of the new device is reportedly Sony Xperia Tablet SGPT1211 and it comes with three storage capacities: 16 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB.

The battery is said to be rated at 6000 mAh and the company claims that this is enough for about 10 hours of internet browsing using theWirelessN integrated adapter.Sony is not wasting any opportunity to profit from the PlayStation brand image, so the Xperia tablet will also feature the popular logo representing the fact that it comes with a certain level of compatibility with the popular console and some of its accessories.Connectivity is well-endowed, as Xperia comes complete with Wi-Fi a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.0 optional 3G, an SD card slot and the usual HD audio jack.

GPS capability is also included, but there’s a chance that the type of GPS will differ from 3G models that will come with A-GPS and Wi-Fi models that will have S-GPS.

Some specific accessories will also be available at launch such as a Dock Speaker, a Docking Stand, a Cradle, a Simple Stand and a thin keyboard.

Pricing is set to start at $450 or €367 and go up if more storage capacity is desired.

Google updates google maps with high resolution imagery

According to the Google's Lat-Long Blog, the company has added new high-resolution aerial photography to Google Maps. This follows similar news from Microsoft a couple of weeks ago who also updated their own Bing Maps service with 215TB of high-resolution imagery.

Included in the Google Maps update are high-resolution images that were taken both at 45-degrees (often referred to as "bird's-eye view") and directly overhead. The new aerial photography covers numerous areas -- 72 countries and regions plus a total of 28 major cities -- 21 of which are in the U.S.

American cities with fresh bird's-eye imagery include Anderson, CA; Beech Island - New Ellenton, GA; Cape Girardeau, MO; Carthage, MO; Chicago, IL; Clarksville, TN; Columbus - Reynoldsburg, OH; Dayton, OH; Everett, WA; Galena, KS; Idaho Falls, ID; Joplin, MO; Lafayette (outskirts), LA; Lancaster, CA; Louisville, KY; Lowell, MA - Nashua, NH; Pittsburgh, PA; Pueblo (outskirts), CO; Redding, CA; Springfield, IL; Yuba City, CA.

International cities sporting the same kind of up-close aerial photography now include Birmingham, UK; Catania, Italy; Denia, Spain; parts of London, United Kingdom; Meyrin - Vernier, Switzerland; Munich, Germany; Neuchatel and Switzerland.

It's worth noting the new imagery of "parts of London" comes just in time for the 2012 Olympics and includes the Olympic Park and Village in Stratford, London. Bird's-eye views of the Olympic stadium do not appear to be available, however.

The blog also lists numerous countries (and regions) who've received a high-res overhaul on Google Maps:

Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belarus, Botswana, Brazil, Bulgaria, Burkina Faso, Canada, Cape Verde, Chile, China, Colombia, Croatia, Cuba, Cyprus, Djibouti, Dominican Republic, Egypt, Eritrea, Estonia, Ethiopia, France, Greece, Greenland, Guinea-Bissau, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Iran, Italy, Jamaica, Latvia, Lesotho, Libya, Lithuania, Madagascar, Mauritania, Mexico, Morocco, Namibia, Nepal, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay, Peru, Poland, Romania, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, Tunisia, Turkey, Ukraine, United Kingdom, United States, Uruguay, Venezuela, Western Sahara, Yemen, Zambia, Zimbabwe
Although Microsoft didn't reveal how many areas were covered in its similar update to Bing Maps, the company mentioned its own additions covered more than 230,000 sq/km of terrain, consisting upward of over 1.1 million files and totaling 215 TB of data. Numbers like may help put into perspective how massive of an undertaking services like Google Maps and Bing Maps truly are.

Grand Theft Auto III coming to Play Station Network tomorrow

Grand Theft Auto III will be released in its PS2 Classic form, indicating that it will cost $9.99 and exist as a straight port without any upgrades or Trophies. While its release date of Tuesday, July 31st is confirmed for North America, its release date in other territories is still unknown.

Grand Theft Auto III is set to be released in the PSN store tomorrow as part of the PlayStation 2 Classics series but before you get your hopes up, it’s worth pointing out that there is no HD support or trophy system to speak of. $10 will get you the standard game as it shipped in 2001 but if that simply isn’t good enough, you might want to wait for a fan remake that’s well under way.

Grand Theft Auto III: Rage Classic is everything you know and love about the revolutionary game – in HD. That’s right; the title is being converted to run on the GTA IV game engine. The cars reportedly drive better while on-foot combat isn’t nearly as difficult as it once was. The trailer below is a good indication of how the project is progressing thus far.

The remake is being done by the same crew that worked on the Vice City Rage and San Andreas Rage projects. The forum thread for the project was started last July but currently doesn’t have a release date for the first beta. Those interested in learning more should check out the 80-page thread for more details.

Of course, there’s always the Android and iOS versions of the game available that both feature higher-resolution graphics and award systems but not everyone will want to play on a tablet or phone.

Microsoft Wins Ban on Android-Based Motorola Devices in Germany

A German judge today found that Motorola's Android-based devices infringe on a Microsoft-held File Allocation Table (FAT) patent.
Judge Andreas Voss found that Motorola gadgets infringe on Microsoft's patent for a "common name space for long and short filenames." Microsoft was awarded an injunction against the infringing products, but it must put up a 10 million Euro bond for the ban to go into effect; if Motorola prevails during the appeals process, it gets that money for losses incurred during the injunction.
According to patent blogger Florian Mueller, Microsoft also got a recall of infringing products from retail and undetermined damages.
A Motorola spokeswoman said the company is "in process of reviewing the ruling, and will explore all of our options including appeal. We don't anticipate an impact on our operations at this time."
David Howard, corporate vice president and deputy general counsel at Microsoft, said "today's decision, which follows similar rulings in the U.S. and Germany, is further proof that Motorola Mobility is broadly infringing Microsoft's intellectual property."
"We will continue to enforce injunctions against Motorola Mobility products in those countries and hope they will join other Android device makers by taking a license to Microsoft's patented inventions," Howard continued.
As Mueller pointed out, this is Microsoft's third win in its patent fight against Motorola. "On a worldwide basis, ten Apple and Microsoft software patents have now been deemed valid and infringed by Android-based devices," he wrote.
Most recently, a ban on Motorola devices in the U.S. was scheduled to go into effect last week, but the Google-owned company said it has come up with a workaround to address the patent violation that prompted the ban. That came after the International Trade Commission (ITC) in May ordered an import ban on Android-based Motorola devices that infringe on a Microsoft-held patent.
Last month, Motorola proposed a settlement that would end its patent dispute with Microsoft, but Redmond was not ready to sign on the dotted line. Motorola Mobility offered to pay 33 cents for every Motorola phone that uses Microsoft ActiveSync. In exchange, Microsoft would pay 50 cents for Windows-based devices that use Motorola-owned technology.
"While we welcome any good faith settlement effort, it's hard to apply that label to a demand that Microsoft pay royalties to Google far in excess of market rates, that refuses to license all the Microsoft patents infringed by Motorola, and that is promptly leaked to the press," Microsoft said at the time.
Microsoft has been busy signing patent licensing deals with a number of tech companies, but has not been able to work something out with Motorola.
In June, there were reports that the Federal Trade Commission was investigating Google over patent abuse charges against Motorola Mobility. Earlier this year, the European Commission opened a patent abuse investigation into Motorola, after fielding complaints from Microsoft and Apple.

Intel Still Hasn’t Paid Its $1.5 Billion EU Fine from 2009

For decades, Intel did just about anything to undercut its main competitor for the x86 market. There’s no denying that x86 is Intel’s invention and that AMD wouldn’t have gotten an x86 license in the first place, had it not been for IBM.The American company feared exactly this kind of monopoly.IBM knew that its PC line of products would be a great success and it feared that if Intel were its main supplier of x86 processors, Intel could later on practically charge IBM whatever amount of money they desired.IBM straight-on told Intel that if they didn’t license the x86 ISA to AMD so that the Texas CPU maker could compete with Intel on providing IBM with x86 processors, IBM would implement another architecture in their PC concept. It’s a strange way to acquire a license, but it happened.

Intel rarely licensed the x86 instruction set. Besides AMD, the only other holders of an x86 license are VIA, IBM, UMC and NEC.AMD has been a thorn in Intel’s backside, and the American-Israeli giant did everything it could to simply make computer manufacturers not build products using AMD processors and make it that customers don’t even hear about AMD at all.

Intel had two main strategies.

The first was the “rebate spin.” Practically, OEMs would buy Intel x86 processors and then, if they didn’t sell AMD-based products, they would receive important rebates from Intel.Back in the days of DELL-Intel exclusivity of the Pentium 4 era, DELL would actually post losses, had it not been for Intel’s important rebates and marketing funds. The second strategy was the “marketing spin.” Practically, if a computer manufacturer advertised a product based on an Intel processor, Intel would require them to play the “Intel jingle” at the end of their commercial clip.

For every advertising clip that featured the “Intel jingle,” the processor giant would practically cover the ad expenses by itself.

This way, Intel achieved many goals at the same time.

The Intel brand was gaining very good popularity among the end-users and the OEM was tempted not to advertise any system but Intel-based products, as this advertising was much more affordable – if not downright free. The third goal was that this way AMD remained practically unknown for the customer as a competing alternative, because if an OEM advertised AMD-based products, it would lose all the Intel rebates, marketing money and it would practically have to sustain and pay for its own advertising.

It’s quite amazing how Intel is allowed to not pay a fine for almost three years in a row. It is even more astonishing that this is a $1.45 billion fine, and that the mountain of evidence has been available for everybody to see for the last two decades. On the other hand, the irony might spell that it is good to see that EU is good and tender with these oligarchic corporations and that democracy prevails in the corporatocracy-driven world, while the customers fill Intel’s pockets, not knowing that the affordable alternative even exists.

Dead Trigger for Android Gets Bug Fix Update

So far, the developers confirmed the following bugs have been fixed: not working controls (on Xperia devices or “180° Turn”); too high difficulty of enemies on higher ranks (SWAT zombies); crash in Menu when too many missions were “available”; Booster “Ammo Supply”; free gold for liking on Facebook; Revive Kit; In-App Purchases.Aside from these bug fixes, MADFINGER Games included a few tweaks, such as the ability to access New Hope after first mission.

The damage caused by mines, cutters, exploding barrels and turrets has been tweaked as well. Those who were complaining on the enemy AI can now rest easy as developers have tweaked it too.MADFINGER Games also added a new Help tab in the Main Menu. There are also new unlocked items in shop, which are marked with “Unlocked” for higher visibility.

Dead Trigger 1.1.1 is now available as a free download via Google Play store and it should be fully compatible with all devices running Android 2.1 and later.

Mark Zuckenberg shuts the rumours of facebook mobile

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has denied rumours that the company is working with HTC to produce self-branded smartphone with an exclusive operating system.

technofreakss.blogspot.comZuckerberg made it clear that the company is working on dramatically improving the mobile Facebook experience, and that’s probably exactly what all that former Apple talent is working on. Beyond improving the experience for users, Zuck needs to focus on making sure Facebook’s core is profitable now that he’ll be reporting earnings publicly on  a quarterly basis. He’ll happily let other companies continue pumping out new phones. Companies like HTC, who turned out the Salsa and ChaCha with deep Facebook integration.

At the company's first-ever earnings call, Zuckerberg said that “it would not really make much sense” to build a Facebook phone. He further pointed out that Facebook is most used app on all platforms, therefore every phone out there is a Facebook phone.
Zuckerberg's comments are likely to put an end to all sorts of speculations related to Facbeook developing self-branded phone.

Technofreakss.Blogspot.com
Recently, Bloomberg reported that Facebook and HTC were working closely on the Facebook phone, slated to launch mid-2013. The report further said the phone was supposed to launch this year but then the release was pushed back to give HTC more time to work on other phones.
Back in April, HTC was rumoured to be working on a Facebook phone with an 'exclusive operating system'. Another rumour surfaced in May saying the phone will be released next year.

OnLive partners with Ouya's gaming console "Kickstarter"

Supporters wondering exactly what they’ll be able to play when the open, Android-based Ouya console is released can wonder a little less today, as the indie-friendly console maker announced that OnLive’s library of hundreds of streamable games would be available at launch.
Ouya, the Android-based gaming console that has secured more than $5 million in funding from Kickstarter, has a new partner: online gaming firm OnLive.

"We are pleased to announce that OnLive will be available on Ouya at launch, extending and building on our commitment to make the best games available to everyone, everywhere," Bruce Grove, general manager of Ouya, said in a blog post.

OnLive's Grove said he was excited by the idea that console gaming might become "more available and open."

"Ouya is rethinking the console business, making waves by using standard technology to make gaming for your living room accessible, affordable and more innovative than ever," Grove said. "In OnLive's case, we pioneered a groundbreaking, cloud-based system that instantly delivers games to any device on demand."

OnLive said that once the Ouya ships, OnLive will provide on-demand access to the games from more than 80 publishers. Gamers can start playing on the Ouya and pick up on the PC, smartphone, or tablet.
OnLive promised free, 30-minute demos "for nearly every game in our ever-growing library," including Ravaged and Darksiders II.
Last week, Ouya said its first official game will be Human Element, a post-zombie apocalyptic game from game developer Robotoki. "Robotoki is the first studio to commit to building a game exclusively for OUYA: an episodic prequel that will set the stage for his eventual release of Human Element in 2015," Ouya said.
Today, meanwhile, Ouya released new images of its console and controller (above). "Please note that the design is still in progress - but we couldn't hold out any longer. We needed you to know that the controller has two handles. You can hold it in both hands," the company said.

Ouya said it is still deciding about the controller, and pondering an option that will let color-blind users play.

Windows 7 lags Windows 8 in terms of security

The precise details of what they discovered were barely within the realm of my comprehension. Apparently many doubly-linked lists within Windows 8 are now protected by "pool cookies." To avoid exploits that involve forcing arbitrary code or data into places it doesn't belong, Windows 8 randomizes locations for memory allocation and adds "guard pages" as needed. That sort of thing.

Researchers Chris Valasek (Senior Security Researcher at Coverity) and Tarjei Mandt (senior vulnerability researcher at Azimuth Security) spend their days seeking ways to compromise security in Windows. They're good guys; if they find a problem they report it, rather than exploiting it for illicit gain. At the Black Hat conference they reported on their analysis of new low-level security features in Windows 8.

In between slides filled with code and intense details, Valasek and Mandt displayed a couple that anybody could understand. The column for Windows Vista was all red, meaning not secure. Windows 7 was close, with just a few green checkmarks. And of course Windows 8 displayed a column of solid green checkmarks. Expert or not, we know that green is good.

After the talk I checked in with Valasek.
Rubenking: Back in the day I would write TSR (Terminate and Stay Resident) programs in DOS, and they were great, and useful. But the malware writers used the same DOS features to write bad stuff. Microsoft could have shut them down, but they would have shut me down too. It seems from your talk like they don't plan to shut anybody down. They're doing fine-tuning, working really hard to ensure that everything still works while they crank up security. Do you think it's conceivable you could write an operating system that just wouldn't be vulnerable to attack?

Valasek: No, that doesn't exist. Not as long as humans are writing the code. Once Skynet takes over and humans don't write code any more that might be possible. They have to have a certain amount of data and algorithms and structures that are needed, so there's always a potential to use this stuff for exploitation purposes. Here's the thing. If you don't make it impossible, but you make it severely difficult so only a tenth of one percent of the population can do it, you've effectively lowered the threat to decent levels.

Rubenking: And if you hire that one tenth of one percent…
Valasek: That's just what Google and Microsoft have done. Hire that one tenth of one percent, then you're good.
Rubenking: Thank you Chris!
Indeed, Windows 8 isn't perfect. Valasek and Mandt laid out a number of possible avenues that hackers might conceivably exploit. But as Valasek said, it will be severely difficult, and only the most adept will come close to exploiting the tiny vulnerabilities that remain.

Black Hat Conference 2012-- NFC (Near Field Communication)- Security Breach in Android

"Specialist uses NFC(Near Field Communication) to attack android smartphones... - a loophole in android security .."

Recently researchers at Black Hat Security Conference, held at Las Vegas, reveals the security loophole in android smartphones..

Experts demonstrated the security breach of delivering malicious softwares and code using a new latest revealed features named Near Field Communication(NFC).NFC is already present is recently launched devices such as Samsung Galaxy S3 and HTC one X.

Security flaws arises using NFC by jst placing the device few centimeters away from the hacked device , and the job is done ..!!
Complete data including photos contacts and even payment related transactions can be affected using NFC.This can be done by simply deploying hidden reader to snatch the data, from an NFC-enabled card in someone's pocket by swiping a reader very close to the card.

Another gap in android security was availed by Charlie Miller (reasearcher at Accuvant). Which implements the replacing of a tag of a website which ws functioned to direct to the some other page , by a tag which would redirect to the malicious website and may compromise your phone in terms of protection.

They also figured out the way to design the device which can easily do the job for you ..
Experts further added , this postage stamp sized device could be placed at crowdy public places and when the device holder passby , the phone is highjacked without any any user interaction.

So better beware of your surrounding ...You can also be Victim of NFC-Jacking ...!!

The only best possible solution is to Disable NFC via setting menu/widget when not in use.

OS X Mountain Lion - updated OS for MAC Users

Apple today replaced last year's version of OS X with a shiny, new model. But in the process, it also quietly scrubbed that older version from its digital and physical stores.

Several readers have reached out to let us know that Lion, which was replaced with Mountain Lion today, can no longer be found on the Mac App Store. The same goes for the USB thumb drive Apple sold with a Lion installer for those who could not purchase it online. Links to Lion in the Mac App Store now show a warning message that the product is not available.

Apple is delivering Mountain Lion as a Mac App Store download and upgrade to existing Mac users for just US$19.99. This cheap move is one of the smartest that Apple ever made. First, downloading and installing is easy. Second, the cost  is plenty fair. Third, the first two points add up to genius: Apple will entice many of its customers to migrate to the latest and greatest version of its operating system.

This move will let the company deliver better products to its customers and ensure a higher degree of customer satisfaction. In addition, it will create a bigger, broader audience for Apple developers to sell their apps into. This is a wicked cool feedback loop for the entire Apple ecosystem. You can bet that Microsoft will attempt a similar process with Windows 8 and its customer base.

Worlds Thinnest Laptop

Selecting a mobile PC is a process of balancing trade-offs. Screen size, computational horsepower, battery life, weight, size, and price are all factors that vary from one type of laptop to another. In the past, you had to choose between capabilities like battery life, size, and performance. These tradeoffs are becoming less pronounced with the new crop of thin and light laptops. With these PCs, you can enjoy ultra-mobility, great battery life, and have the power to run popular consumer or enterprise apps. In this post I’ll talk about the latest thin and light laptop from Samsung: the Series 9 (13.3” in this case, 15” models are also available).
series-9-in-hands-1-500
If you want to push the limits of mobile computing technology, you have to take on significant engineering and manufacturing challenges. This is exactly what Seong-Woo Nam, Executive Vice President of the IT Solutions Business at Samsung did in late 2011. Seong-Woo Nam challenged Samsung engineers to shave 3.44mm off the already thin 16.33mm Samsung Series 9 laptop (first generation) that was in production at the time. Samsung succeeded in bringing this 12.9mm updated Series 9 machine to market in early 2012, an impressive accomplishment.
So how do you reduce the thickness of an already thin laptop by more than 20%? The answer is by examining every component that makes up the laptop, and by shrinking the thickness of most major components. Translation: this is a very highly engineered machine with tons of “custom” components that were designed specifically for this laptop. While the size of the machine was reduced, the list of capabilities is impressive: SSD for fast boot, USB 2.0 and 3.0 for great peripheral connectivity, ultra bright 400 nit screen, great battery life, and more.
series-9-thin-profile-1-600
I had a chance to get my hands on a couple variations of this updated Samsung Series 9, including the 900X3C (Intel Ivy Bridge version), and the 900X3B (Intel Sandy Bridge version). These models (13.3” screen) are pretty much identical with the exception of the processor utilized. When I first picked up this laptop, I was impressed with the “thinness” and the solid feel of quality. I asked myself: how did Samsung do that?

Engineering the World’s Thinnest Laptop

The engineers at Samsung started work on the updated Series 9 design by re-thinking the enclosure of the PC. This updated Series 9 would be built on an aluminum chassis machined from a solid billet with diamond tipped cutters. The resulting stiffness, lightness and finish (sandblasted and painted in most visible areas) are quite impressive. In addition to re-thinking the outside of the laptop, all of the major internal components were updated or optimized as well. It’s not enough to just make the parts thinner and lighter, they also need to perform well. Samsung has a series of stringent tests that are conducted on laptops before they are certified for mass production. This Series 9 update imposed some big certification challenges due to the fact that so many components were being redesigned, and dimensions being squeezed as small as possible at the same time.
After countless hours of engineering iterations and testing Samsung was able to meet their stringent criteria, and the updated Samsung Series 9 was unveiled at CES 2012 (the entire project was completed in a matter of a few months).

Some of the design highlights for the updated Series 9 include custom ports that are exposed in an elegant fashion on both sides of the laptop. On the right side (above image) we see the microphone, display port connector, microphone/headphone jack, and USB 2.0 port.

On the left side of the laptop (above image) we see the power jack, USB 3.0 port, micro HDMI port, and network port (network dongle is supplied with PC). You can tell from looking at these ports that quite a bit of thought and engineering craftsmanship went into the design.
One of the features that makes the Samsung Series 9 attractive to enterprise customers is the available TPM (Trusted Platform Module) chip. With this hardware capability, you can use many Windows productivity features like virtual smart cards, bit locker, and direct access.
How thin and how light can laptops get? That’s a good question. There’s always the need to balance the trade-offs between structural rigidity and overall thickness (imposing a theoretical limit on how thin a laptop can get). Samsung did a great job managing these trade-offs that off with the latest Series 9 machine!
