The new law means the Netherlands will not go down the more reckless road taken by nations like France, which have enforced “three strikes” laws that force ISP’s to block Internet access to users who found guilty of downloading illegal content from the internet. The Netherlands already has a similar tax on blank media, such as writable CD’s and DVD’s. The new law will unfold the tax to all electronic devices sold in the Netherlands, including hard drives, laptop’s, PC’s, smart phones and personal video recorders. Dutch rights holders estimated the new tax could bring in around $80 million (€60 million) initially to compensate for revenues lost through piracy in Netherlands.
