Airtel punished for blocking Torrent Sites
From India: Three months after troubling thousands of web users with its rigorous implementation of the Madras High Court’s stop privacy order, Internet Service Provider Airtel has currently been punished by a Karnataka consumer forum.
"The ISP blocked complete websites wrongfully thus giving incomplete service while justifying their actions through misunderstanding of the orders given by the court" according to the forum.
However, following a petition by Vinay B, a resident of Shimoga, the Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has directed Airtel to pay Rs. 20,000 for ‘deficiency in web service’ thereby inflicting mental agony to the plaintiff.
“By misinterpreting the Madras tribunal order, Airtel blocked entire websites. It’s needless to mention that the company’s actions point to deficiency in Internet service therefore wrong trade practice” according to the forum.
However, an RTI (Right to Information) application filed by the Software Freedom Law Center Indian capital reveals that Copyright Labs had asked MTNL for obstruction of whole website, a wrong interpretation of the initial judicial order that allowed for under specific URL obstruction.
