Here we'll try to decrease the file size without much loss in quality.
You may doubt about the compressions but the quality will be very much viewable and hearable.
So lets get started.
I personally use and recommend using MediaCoder for ripping purposes.
It is available for free and can be downloaded from its website http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net/index.htm
After installing the software restart your system once before using it for the first time.
Then double click to open the program and you will be greeted by this window.
Before you rip a disc, select a location where you want the output file to be saved.
Click the highlighted area
Then select the folder where you want the file to be saved and click OK
To add the files to be ripped you can select the Entire Directory by clicking Add Dir
In the next window select your CD/DVD drive or the folder where the files are located and click OK
All the files that can be ripped will be then added automatically
If its a single file or if the remaining files are useless (like extra shots, editor cuts, etc) then you can select just one file by clicking Add file
Then in the next window select the file you want to transcode and click Open
Setting the Audio Codec
Click on the Audio tab and make the settings as shown in the image, also use the Nero codec by clicking on the tab Nero
Use the bitrate as 32kbps (do not use above 64kbps as above it won't make any change in quality but will only increase file size)
Setting the Video Codec
Click on the Video tab and make all the settings as shown in the image.
For bitrate I would advice don't go above 300 kbps. (around 200 kbps will work in most cases).
After done with that click on the button - Format
Then just follow and change the settings as shown in the images.
After every setting click Apply to apply the changes
In most of the cases the video is not interlaced, turn it on if it is.
Then click on the Muxer tab and apply the settings as shown in the image
After that click on the Picture tab and apply the settings as shown in the image.
For the frame rate select 24
Check if you need to resize the resolution of the video.
To do that click on the Summary tab and check the resolution.
Here I find the resolution too high so I will resize it to a smaller resolution (This will save an enormous amount of space, I'll show how to play the video regaining the size and replaying it at best quality later in this tutorial)
So I would advice don't go for higher resolutions.
Also, while resizing the resolution make sure you don't change the proportion as it will make the video look distorted.
Like in this case the video was 640x464 so I changed it to 480x264 i.e. exactly 3/4th of both the numbers.
So choose exactly 3/4th or 1/2 of the original resolution.
640x464 3/4th of it would be 480x264
Like for 640x464 1/2 of it would be 320x232
You can then check all your settings in the Summary tab and get an estimated file size.
Once you have checked all your settings click Start
The encoding should start and you will get a screen like this
How to best play these files
These files are best played on VLC Player which can be freely downloaded from http://www.videolan.org/
Once you have installed VLC player, open the player and
Click Settings » Preferences » Input / Codecs » Other codecs » FFmpeg, and set the post processing quality to 6, save your settings and restart the player.
This will improve the quality of not only my encoded videos but all videos
To increase the size of the video
Click Video » Zoom » 2:1 Double OR Double Click anywhere inside the video for full screen.
Enjoy Ripping.
