How to Upload an Untouched DVDR using dvdbackup

dvdbackup - http://dvdbackup.sourceforge.net/

This guide is based on a Debian Linux system, but the concepts apply to all other Linux systems as well.

First you must ensure DVD decoding software is installed (if you are able to watch a DVD, it is). On Debian, the package is called 'libdvdcss'. you can get the package via adding the debian-multimedia repository to your 'sources.conf' file.

The quick guide for installing libdvdcss on Debian:

  • Go to http://debian-multimedia.org/debian-m.php scroll down and find a mirror near you.
  • Add the lines beginning with 'deb ...' and 'deb src ...' to your '/etc/apt/sources.list' (as root)
  • Run 'apt-get update' (or aptitude update, if you use aptitude) (as root)
  • Install it with 'apt-get install libdvdcss' or 'aptitude install libdvdcss' (as root)

Now that the decoding library is installed, continue with installing dvdbackup

aptitude install dvdbackup

If everything went fine, you can rip your dvd now by running:

dvdbackup -M -o ~/Movie_Name

where 'Movie_Name' will be the folder in which the ripped DVD will be saved. dvdbackup assumes your dvd device is '/dev/dvd', so if it isn't, add the option '-i /path/to/dvd_device'

If you have problems while installing, please refer to http://debian-multimedia.org/ and ask questions in our help forum.

If you have installed everything and have problems with ripping, please consult "man dvdbackup" or refer tohttp://pwet.fr/man/linux/commandes/dvdbackup
