Batch CUE File Editing

This guide may look a little long but it really should be quick and fairly painless. I have simply tried to be detailed and account for any problems.

When ripping a large CD collection according to the guide provided, there are a lot of CUE files that need to be edited once you have finished ripping all your albums. This only applies if you want to store your CUE files in the same folder as the album. This tutorial will walk you through automating that task. You will still have to move the files to the folder manually after completing this guide.

Warnings

Backup
Back up all your cue's in case this doesn't work. This method worked well for me, and I have tried to account for any possibilities, but something could go wrong.
If they are all in the same folder, just simply copy and paste them to somewhere else. If they are all in different folders, simply do a file search for "*.cue" (without the quotes) in your music directory, then copy and paste the results to another backup folder. I would also keep the backup if possible (in case you don't realize until later that something messed up). Emailing it to yourself would be a good idea.

Existing Torrents
Do not do this to anything that you have download (or that you have uploaded yourself) from what.cd and wish to continue seeding. If this changes a CUE file inside a torrent you will have problems seeding that torrent.

Unknowns
This tutorial was written specifically with this guide in mind. If you did not use this guide, and especially if you did not use non-complaint cues or you did not use EAC, use this guide with caution. (Note that this tutorial is set up for you to "check your work" first, so it should be ok to attempt this tutorial until it has you make a change - which occurs first in step 9).

Guide

1. Download V-Grep ( Alternate Link ). If you really like the program, the author (not myself) would appreciate a postcard .

2. After extracting the ZIP file, open up grep.exe. Select English for your language (unless of course, you are Polish). Once the program starts, double check that you are in "Find in files" mode, along the top bar.

3.
  • If your CUE files are all in the same directory, click the folder icon to the right of the "Directory" text entry to select the directory with all your CUE files. Then make sure the the button to the right of the "Mask" entry isnot pressed in.
  • If your CUE files are already inside the album folders but not edited, simply select the folder containing all the albums. Then make sure the the button to the right of the "Mask" entry is pressed in.

4. In the "Mask" text entry area, type in
*.cue
This will restrict the search to any CUE files.

5. In the "Replace w." text entry space, type in
FILE "

6. In the "Search for expression" area, type in
FILE.*\\

This is a regular expression that searches for anything that starts with "FILE" (no quotes) and ends with a backslash.

7. Now it is time for a test run. Double check that the button to the right of the "Replace w." text box IS NOT pressed in. Also double check that the "regular expression" and "case sensitive" boxes are checked and the "multiline mode" is not. I don't think the binary files should make a difference.

8. Click the start button, and review the results. The program will highlight the beginning of each file line, all the way until the beginning of the file name.

9. Read all of this step before doing anything. Once you have checked that it has found the proper parts, click the button to the right of the "Replace w." box that we check in 7, and then click Start. The program will then replace everything that it had highlighted in step 8 with <FILE "> (no <>'s).THE PROGRAM DOES NOT GIVE YOU CONFIRMATION THAT IT HAS MADE THE CHANGES, DO NOT ATTEMPT THE SEARCH AGAIN. THIS MAY DESTROY YOUR CUE FILES.

10. Open up your cue files outside the program to check that they have been edited properly. If they have, relax, you're done!
