uTorrent for Mac - Multiple Save Folders

Sometimes, users need to move files around. Unfortunately, compared to the more established Windows client, uTorrent for Mac lacks certain features that hinders its use. While present in beta builds, the support for multiple save locations is one of these shortcomings in the present stable release. Here are several methods of overcoming this issue.

  • If you are adding new torrents to uTorrent for Mac, and wish to save them to specific locations other than the default save folder, modify the Default Download Location found in Preferences -> Downloads appropriately for each torrent in question. revert the Default Download Location once you are finished, or else new torrents will be saved to the last location specified. starting with v.1.1.0 there is an option to set the download location easily via the add torrent prompt.

The following options for moving the save locations of torrents already loaded into uTorrent are listed in order of ease of use, with preference given to graphical user interface methods

easiest method:*
1. upgrade to any uTorrent for Mac v.1.1.0 or higher (v.1.0.2 is the stable release, so these would be beta)
2. use as usual, with the advanced -> move target location option

*always use a whitelisted client when connecting to the what.cd tracker whenever possible. as of this edit, what.cd allows clients up to 1.5.x beta, so this probably is the best method if you are okay with beta software and it doesn't raise issues with other trackers. check the release notesand official thread for unresolved issues. currently, these include potential crashes and problems with some new features. Beta software is labeled beta because it is non-production and ideally should not be used as the main application.

easy method:
1. download the beta build, but save the .app in separate folder (don't overwrite current uTorrent.app in Applications folder).
2. close current uTorrent if running; open the beta build version
(2.a. beta builds may not be supported/allowed by trackers. safest precaution is to disallow connections to trackers while doing this, by disabling internet connectivity or via other methods)
3. say no to making it the default client.
4. all your torrents and such should be present just as if you upgraded or were using the old copy. this is because all your data is saved in local user folders and not associated with the app file
5. proceed to change folder locations
6. quit the beta uTorrent app and send to trash, or save for later use
7. open your original uTorrent app, and the files should be ready to seed

option without the use of beta uTorrent builds
1. locate the .torrent files. if you don't have copies, you can locate them in ~/Library/Application Support/uTorrent
2. remove the problematic torrent files from within the uTorrent client (Remove from List option)
3. go to Preferences -> Downloads, and set the Default Download Location appropriately
4. add the torrent files again and they should now point to the proper folder
5. repeat steps 3 and 4 for folders in different locations
6. reset the Default Download Location to what it normally should be
6. go back to seeding as normal

option using a text editor to manually change save paths
1. locate the resume.dat file (~/Library/Application Support/uTorrent)
2. while making sure uTorrent is not running open the file in a text editor such as TextEdit (uTorrent writes to this while running obviously, and we can't save any changes while it is using it or we'll run into issues)
3. locate the files you want to alter the file paths using "Find" (command-F)
4. alter the path statement to the appropriate one
ex. if I want to change the target from the Downloads folder to Documents, I'd change it from
path50:/Users/999999/Downloads/Calvin And Hobbes
to
path50:/Users/999999/Documents/Calvin And Hobbes
5. save the resume.dat file, making sure you didn't alter anything unnecessary and all file paths are correct
6. open uTorrent as normal and the new paths should be present. may need to do a force recheck
