ImgBurn - Burning a Perfect Copy with a CUE File

Introduction

ImgBurn, despite its somewhat gaudy website is a very popular and powerful CD/DVD/Blu-Ray burning tool for Windows that is available for free, although it is closed source. (its not shareware). You can either get it from their site www.imgburn.com/download, if you want the latest version or a translated version, however it is also made available in the What.CD Toolbox 3.0 for your convenience. This guide will cover installing and burning an audio CD that you can play in your music player using a .CUE file. If you are looking to do something else with ImgBurn most of it is extremely easy, however if you take a peek at the settings tab you can see that it can be tailored to deal with all sorts of strange burner configurations and what not if that is what you're after. Since describing all the features would take pages and pages, I would direct you to the ImgBurn Guides forum (which is very helpful).

Downloading and Installing

Is a very straightforward process, simply execute the setup.exe and click through the installer! It's worth noting that it will try to install a yahoo toolbar as well (remember utorrent does this too and its a great program ). Once you've installed it, run it!

Burning a CD using a .CUE file

The advantages of burning a CD using a .CUE file versus some other method is that only a .CUE generated from a CD rip will give you a perfect copy of the CD including things that aren't part of the music files themselves, such as gap timings and CD-TEXT.

The default opening screen of ImgBurn is pictured here, with all the options for what we can burn.

We see ImgBurn can do a lot of stuff, like creating images (including CUEs) burning images, or just burning files. To burn with a CUE, select "Write image file to disc". Now either: File->Browse for a source file... or click on the folder icon and find your CUE sheet (they are usually included in FLAC download folders).

Now if this is your first time attempting to burn from FLAC you should get the following error... Don't Panic! (If you don't get this error, awesome just skip right to burning)

The solution is to install the appropriate filter! More filters can be found at the following links. An MP3 filter comes with Windows.

Other filters (APE, OGG, etc.)

Installing the filter isn't hard, you should get a .rar archive, extract the contents and run install.bat(Ignore any strange Windows - didn't install correctly notifications).

Now that that is done, try the same process again, but this time there should be no error! The resulting screen should look somewhat like the one below.

The outlined settings are the ones you might want to check before going on to burning. First off, if the button in the bottom left is grayed out, ImgBurn probably has a problem with your drive (or theres no disc in it). Make sure you select the proper Destination as the drive you want to burn to. (If that doesn't work, consult ImgBurn.com or Google)

You may want to check verify, it will result in the CD being verified to make sure there were no errors in burning. Otherwise, after burning you can take it out and play it immediately.

Write Speed can also be set to max since you want to hear that music now! Lowering it may reduce the chances of bad-writes, although those are very uncommon as it is.

Congratulations! You've got a perfect copy of the original album!
